Faun Fables, Paul Fonfara (Painted Saints) and Stephanie RearickThursday, June 22, 2017 - 8:30pmThe Frequency121 W. Main St. Madison, WI 53703 [Map link] $10 adv / $12 dos All Ages Faun Fables Faun Fables are time-travelers from another era, somehow more aligned with the power and allure of Earth than is usual in our day and age. Turning heads and ears since 1998, they’ve spent a good part of the last few decades touring North America and Europe, with time in Israel, Australia and New Zealand. Their latest album, Born of the Sun, (2016) is their seventh release on DRAG CITY RECORDS, and fairly bursts at the seams with colors and shades all their own. DAWN McCARTHY’s voice, which The New Yorker described as “one of the more compelling instruments in contemporary music," can open hearts and minds with a whisper to a rallying battle cry into her mythical world, animated by the experimental musicality of her partner NILS FRYKDAHL (Free Salamander Exhibit, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) with his electric guitars, bass, flutes, and rich, weathered vocals. When not traveling together as a family, they raise their three daughters in Sonoma County, California. http://www.dragcity.com/artists/faun-fables Paul Fonfara - Painted Saints Painted Saints is centered around the songwriting of Paul Fonfara. With odd cinematic twists, and a transparent sense of sincerity they tackle a Spaghetti Western, Heroin Klezmer, Experimental Sad Bastard Chamber Folk, Psychadelic Shoegaze Dirge Motown, Andrew Bird if he was from Twin Peaks sound. A transplant to Minneapolis from Denver, where after finishing a degree in music studying Clarinet, Fonfara got his start in DeVotchKa, then moved on to record and tour internationally with 16 Horsepower/Woven Hand and with Jim White on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label. When Fonfara settled in Minneapolis 9 years ago, his well-honed and exploratory talents were immediately recognized as he became a member of local favorites Spaghetti Western String Co., balancing the precision and delicacy of that band with the raucous playfulness of the Brass Messengers, and silent movie film scores of Dreamland Faces. To fill out Painted Saints, Fonfara recruited many of Minnepolis’ finest players including members of The Poor Nobodys, and Dark Dark Dark. Stephanie Rearick "A new Stephanie Rearick album is a bit like a trip to the art museum. Like a captivating painting, the longer you look, the more detail you're likely to notice. Rearick's music has always bent toward the abstract. She excels at creating dreamscapes out of sparse instrumentation, vocal loops and uncommon sounds..." - Local Sounds Piano, keyboard, trumpet, voice. Based in Madison, Rearick has enjoyed a solo career that has taken her around the world and has resulted in seven solo releases. She also plays in Ladyscissors and Negative Example.
